Carleton University - Introduction to Macroeconomics (ECON 1002)

ECON 1002: Introduction to Macroeconomics provides a comprehensive introduction to economics, with a focus on both microeconomic and macroeconomic principles. Students will explore key economic concepts and their application to real-world issues, such as unemployment, inflation, labour markets, and economic growth. Main topics to be covered include consumption, saving, investment, and the role of financial institutions like banks, bonds, and stocks. The course also examines international finance and exchange rates, the business cycle, and models such as IS-MP analysis and the Phillips curve to understand the relationships between interest rates, output, and inflation. Special emphasis is placed on the roles of monetary and fiscal policy in managing the economy.

A minimum grade of C- is required to progress to higher-level courses such as ECON 2102 and ECON 3001. Students who receive a deferred (DEF) final grade will be unable to enroll in any course for which ECON 1002 is a prerequisite until the grade is resolved. By the end of the course, students will have developed a foundational understanding of macroeconomic concepts, equipping them to analyze contemporary economic challenges and prepare for more advanced coursework in economics.
