This course, MAT 2379: Introduction to Biostatistics - provides an introduction to biostatistics with a focus on descriptive statistics, probability concepts, and the application of statistical software. Key topics include the normal distribution, the Central Limit Theorem, statistical estimation, and hypothesis testing, all illustrated through simulations. The course also explores the design of experiments, analysis of paired sampling, categorical data, and regression. Examples are drawn from the biosciences to offer practical and relevant applications, ensuring students develop hands-on experience with statistical tools.

Core concepts include probabilities, tree diagrams, and Punnett squares, followed by axioms and rules of probability such as Bayes' rule and independence. Students will study both discrete and continuous random variables, including the binomial and normal distributions. Statistical inference topics cover sampling distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and comparisons of means and proportions for independent and paired samples. The course concludes with regression and correlation, providing a solid foundation in biostatistical methods for students with prerequisites in introductory mathematics (MAT 1320 or MAT 1330).
