(UofT) ECO220: Introduction to Data Analysis and Applied Econometrics

ECO220: Introduction to Data Analysis and Applied Econometrics provides a comprehensive introduction to econometric methods and data analysis. The course is divided into four main sections: understanding data (collection, processing, and interpretation), probability (quantifying uncertainty), statistical inference (using samples to infer population characteristics), and regression (modeling economic relationships). Through a mix of lectures and practical sessions, students will gain hands-on experience in working with data, interpreting results, and effectively communicating findings.

Key topics include describing categorical and quantitative data, understanding association and correlation through scatterplots, and building linear regression models. Additional focus is placed on probability, random variables, sampling distributions, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. Prerequisites for the course ensure students have a foundational understanding of economics and mathematics. Accepted pathways include a minimum of 63% in both ECO101H1 and ECO102H1 or a higher grade of 80% in ECO105Y1. Alternatives are ECO100Y5 with 67% or higher, or a 63% average in ECO101H5 and ECO102H5.
